Choosing a Coffee Table for Your Living Room

Choosing a Coffee Table for Your Living Room

The right coffee table should fit your room without getting in the way. Before you choose one, measure the space in front of your sofa. As a rough guide, look for a table about half to two-thirds the length of the sofa, with enough room to walk past and sit comfortably. The table height should be close to the sofa seat height, or a little lower.

Which shape works best?

Rectangular tables tend to suit longer sofas. Round tables can be easier to move around, especially in smaller rooms, while a square table can work well with a larger seating area.

If you sometimes need extra surface space, nesting tables are handy. You can pull them out when you have guests and tuck them away afterwards.

What will you use it for?

If you keep books, remotes or other bits in the living room, a table with a shelf or drawers can help keep things tidy. If you prefer a more open look, choose a simpler design with space underneath.

Think about who uses the room, too. Rounded corners may be more practical in a busy family space, while a glass top might need more frequent cleaning if it gets a lot of use.

Choose a finish you’ll enjoy living with

Wood adds warmth, while glass can make a room feel less crowded. Stone-effect finishes can stand out as a feature. Have a look at the care instructions before you buy, especially if the table will get everyday use.

You don’t need to match the table to every other piece of furniture. Pick one that suits the space, works with your sofa and feels right at home.
